8th Japan Championship (July 19-20-21.2008)

The Japan Championship has been the top-level COR tournament and the only 3-day event of its kind in Japan ever since it started in 2001. Selected players from all over Japan compete for the championship in Tokyo. No table point, raw scores only.

First day
4 games are played and 16 players advance to the second day.

Second day
The 16 players from the first day and 16 seeded players play 2 games. 16 players advance to the second round of another 2 games to compete for 8 places to advance to the third day.

Third day (semifinal and final)
The 8 players play 2 games and 4 advance to the final.
What makes the tournament unique is the way the final is played; after 4 elimination rounds for two and a half days, 4 qualified players play 2 games without time limit. A scorekeeper sits right beside each player and records all distributed hands, picks, discards and winning hands. The mahjong cores are available (except for 2008 ones) at a cost of JPY500/game.
