Japan-China Friendship Tournament in Sendai
Sendai has a lot of international students from China. The Friendship Tournament
started 8 years ago to develop friendly ties with Chinese students.
It’s a two-day event with two different tournaments each day: a team match
with 4-2-1-0 table score by selected Chinese and Japanese players from
all over Japan on the first day, and an individual match with raw scores
on the second day. Anyone can join the second day. The second-day tournament
is characterized by a warm, friendly atmosphere with peals of laughter
due to charming mistakes.
The 9th tournament was held on August 29 and 30, 2009 at Mahjong-gakkou
in Sendai.

Ginza Cup monthly tournament annual final (Atsugi Branch)
Annual final was held on December 20 to put an end to the 11-month long competition.
The reason why it’s not 12-month but 11-month is, there was a fire breakout at a bar next door and all the players had to evacuate in the middle of the tournament in January 2008. That was the first time for everyone to have to worry about one’s safety playing mahjong.
4 qualified players played 4 games (raw scores + uma; +60, +20, -20, -60).
All 4 players had a chance to win at the end of the third game. In the last game, Kimito Kugimiya extended his lead by light hands taking advantage of the situation where other three players would not go out unless with a big hand or a self pick to turn the game around.
